Gujarati style Tuver dhal



Gujarati tuver dhal-A traditional gujarati style tuver dhal, spicy but sweet and tangy in taste.Flavoured with an array of spices it makes a delicious accompaiment to plain boiled rice.

Ingredients:

1 cup toovar dhal
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
3-4 curry leaves
2-3 cloves
1 stick cinnamon
1/2 cup fresh or tinned tomatoes pureed
1 tablespoon red peanuts
1-2 green chilli cut in slits
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 red dry chilli
salt to taste
2-3 pieces kokum
1 teaspoon fresh gingerpaste
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 table spoon gor(jaggery)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh corriander for garnish

Method:
1.Wash and boil 1 cup toovar dhal in 3 cups water in cooker and whisk it.
2.Next strain to remove any skin should be smooth pouring consistency.(add extra water if required)
3.In a pan heat 1 tablespoon oil, when hot add few mustard seeds, red dry chilli,curry leaves, 2-3 cloves, 1 stick cinnamon and 1/2 cup fresh or tinned tomatoes that have been pureed.Cook the tomatoes until they breakdown to a soft paste.
4.Add sliced green chilli
5.Add salt to taste,1/2 teaspoon turmeric, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon gor(jaggery), kokum, 1 tespoon fresh ginger crushed.
6.Add 1 tablespoon red peanuts.
7.Boil the dhal than simmer for 10-15 mins
8.After this add gujarati dhal masala and simmer for 5 more mins.
9.Adjust taste as per your needs.
10.Garnish with fresh chopped coriander.
Serve with plain boiled rice

  4. Is there a difference btw a tuvar dhal and gujarathi tuvar? Didn't know that. Dhal looks great..we call it sambhar in the south.kokum is a new spice to me..why, when I clicked the link it shows me something like a dried mushroom..i have never laid eyes on it before..so I did learn something new. :)

  6. Oh wow...daal,just drink it!! do you use daal masala? I never used it.. saw in V B but didin't buy it..my favorite specially, when I make dry shaak...looks delicious..
